Summary: Muraki adds on to his collection

***

Your first contest with Tatsumi Seiichirou was brief, but exhilarating. You always appreciate a challenge, and the tall, commanding man that forced you to retreat from the battlefield so hastily was worthy of further study.

You always adore finding another doll to add to your collection.

For you Tsuzuki is all the colors of the rainbow, his pain exploding across your consciousness like fireworks. You studied him, strove to shatter his mind completely, all so you could use his body to destroy your greatest enemy and nightmare over and over again.

For you Hisoka is scarlet, coming to you under a blood-red moon. His fear and horror burst into your mind in bright cherry splatters even as your knives and hands and spells carved into his soft young body. It took years to kill him but only hours to destroy him, coating yourself in a thick, crimson river of blood and innocence lost.

Those two both witnessed your initial confrontation with the shadow-wielder. They should have noticed how your eyes lit up with excitement and your words promised a cruel retribution: they should anticipated what happened next.

Your greatest strength isn’t your intellect or skill with the dark arts; no, your greatest strength is your audacity, your force of will. You commit the heinous, immoral crimes no other villain would even envision; you dare to take on demons and shinigami and thrive.

They did not expect you to target someone they considered unassailable, powerful, safe: they forgot, to their regret, that for every fighting style a counter-strategy exits and that every soul has vulnerabilities to exploit.

You enjoyed every moment of the battle, even those times when you were almost outmaneuvered: it just made the victory all the sweeter.

For you Tatsumi is ever-changing, subtle variations on the color grey. This shinigami may control the shadows, but that powerful dark energy cannot exist without the light. The intensity of the his greys waxes and wanes but the stain of the black will always mar the purity of white.

Your only regret is that you had to imprison him in total darkness: the slightest sliver of light would have given your latest doll an opening to escape, no matter how well you crafted the magic that bound his wrists to the headboard of your bed. Even your artificial eye had to be removed, though you cursed the necessity: you could not record this in your usual, scientific way.

But you had other, more pleasant ways to document this encounter, didn’t you? You had your hands to explore every inch of his warm, resisting body, your ears to record every curse, moan and animalistic growl; your mouth and lips to taste his sweat and skin and helpless fury, your teeth to bite and bruise and ravenously devour.

You didn’t have to see Tatsumi to claim your victory; he didn’t have to see you to acknowledge his crushing defeat. And in that darkness you both lay there afterwards, heartbeats slowly returning to their usual pace while the thoughts in your minds raced even more furiously, reliving each moment in painstaking detail.

It is no wonder you let the man go before the first signs of dawn: first of all, Tatsumi’s spontaneous, shocked gasp for air when you released his bonds was priceless; secondly, you recognized the wounded pride and nascent rage building in his soul, twisting his heart and conscience like Tatsumi twists the shadows he commands. You will wait - patient, but anticipatory - for your humiliated, unforgiving adversary to return, because return he will, fighting you time and time again.

And with each meeting you will strip away more of his poise and reserve, much like you removed that sober brown suit; with each encounter you will refashion him into the dark, malevolent doll that will complete your collection of shinigami.

I've never read / seen Yami no Matsuei (though I know the general idea), but this is *very* well done. Especially loving the second person singular, which many try but fewer succeed at. :D
Thank you! *g* The anime is very enjoyable, if you ever have the chance to see it.
Really nice Muraki POV - the second person POV fits his twisted mindset beautifully. You've made an unusual pairing work, because yes, Muraki views everything as a challenge.
Thank you! Muraki is a fascinating character, so much talent and genius twisted terribly wrong.
I LOVE you for this! I never can find enough of this pairing. Thank you!!!
Thank you, I would love to read more fic about both characters!
the stain of the black will always mar the purity of white.
Ooo. OOOO. OOOOOOOOOO!

*grins* Thanks!
Wow! This is terrific! And I could be mistaken, but I believe this is one of the prompts I gave! And I'm ever so glad I did, because, my gosh, did this just push all my buttons, and make me love Tatsumi and the twisted dynamics of Muraki's view of him (and his other two 'dolls') all that much more. What a fabulous take on this scenario! *hugs poor Tatsumi*

There's so much to love here, including "They did not expect you to target someone they considered unassailable, powerful, safe" as that is exactly right - no one would expect our resident penny-pinching, stoic, ShadowMaster to be targetted and made vulnerable. And "For you Tatsumi is ever-changing, subtle variations on the color grey." seems a perfect way to categorize Tatsumi.

I loved how you had Muraki find a clever and perfectly plausible way to keep Tatsumi's shadow powers in check, thus enabling the necessary restraints. (although not at all needed for the awesome impact of this story, I would love to know how Muraki managed to capture him in the first place; I suppose, as we've seen in the series, even shinigami aren't invincible! And that's a great deal of why they're so fascinating, IMHO!)

"You will wait - patient, but anticipatory - for your humiliated, unforgiving adversary to return, because return he will, fighting you time and time again." This is so Muraki, along with your ending, and clearly shows his sheer depravity and genius at play. And you're right, Tatsumi won't ever give in to Muraki or stop resisting. I feel VERY sorry for our poor Tatsumi! *shivers* But what drama and torment and passion is in this little piece, and with a truly wicked implication of more to come.

Wonderfully done! Thank you SO much, Ann, for choosing to respond to this prompt! *longs for more YnM now!* AND for delivering it in such a deliciously, darkly beautiful way.

Pax :-)
Thank you, I appreciate your comments!

It would be fascinating to read about these two characters facing off more often - I suspect there is more vulnerablility and darkness in Tatsumi's inner nature than even he would care to admit - an Muraki just loves peeling away at other character's psyches.
