This is what happens when you pick up idiots lying in the snow.

First you have to take care of them, since letting someone you just saved from hypothermia die from pneumonia is not really all that nice. Then- since the idiot is not only loud, but also completely useless for simple tasks- you have to teach them how to do everything. The creative awakening techniques are just his way of coping with Kazahaya’s terrible rice cooking skills.

What no one told Rikuo is that saving the idiot was going to be frequent thing. Like right now: the entirety of the third floor students are looking at them and Kazahaya’s is too busy clinging at him to actually remember about maintaining their cover.

“Sorry, he gets a little loud when he is excited.” He says and then purposefully holds Kazahaya closer in case he decides to speak. Luckily, his partner is too busy being embarrassed by the looks the other students are giving them to speak.

The crowd slowly disperses: some students roll their eyes at them while some others glare daggers at him, a last group smiles and two even give him a knowing wink. He sees Mukofujiwara going down the stairs and quickly drags Kazahaya into his own room.

“Are you really an idiot? Now they’ll really think we are a couple!”

So much for silence. At least they are in a somewhat private place now. “Think I can’t stand the jealousy of your fan club?”

“ YOU B-mphhhh” Rikuo keeps his hand over Kazahaya’s mouth until he is sure his partner is going to keep his voice down. He is kind of slow on the uptake.

“I don’t have a fan club.” Kazahaya whispers.

“ Well, then I guess all those boys selling naked pictures of you were just pretending...”

“They what?!” Kazahaya hisses and looks close to fainting, but he does get that Rikuo is just joking after he laughs at him for a minute or so. They have been here only a few days, after all.

Give it a few weeks and Rikuo is pretty sure the students will organize.

“Asshole.” Kazahaya wraps himself in the jacket and sits in one of the beds, while Rikuo sits on the other “ It’s weird.”

“ The job? We had worse.”

“ Not the job! The entire school... are all schools like this? The baths and maybe it makes sense with bird cages but I’ve never...”

“ Bird cages?” Kazahaya’s mind works in strange ways, that’s all he knows.

“ Nayuki said....never mind. I really don’t get what’s so interesting about me”

He would ask if Kazahaya is fishing for compliments, but he sounds sincere. Rikuo often wonders if his partner has been living under a rock all this time, or maybe just somewhere without any mirrors.

“ Well, I suppose some are fooled by the harmless appearance. I bet none of them suspects how nasty you can be.” Although, privately, he has to admit that particular feature is what makes life with Kazahaya interesting. There’s no fun in teasing if there’s no response to it. And finding creative ways to wake him is also entertaining.

“ You are worse than me! At least I’m not always being purposefully mean.”

“ Most of them are probably just interested in your looks. You are ...kind of cute, after all.”

“I’m not cute.” It might be a little more convincing if Rikuo didn’t think he looks as fearsome as an angry wet cat.

“ Attractive then. They must all like pretty and loud nasty boys.”

“ It’s not how I look! If it was that then they would be going after you too.”

“ You sound like if you had been giving it some thought”

His words are meant more as a joke than anything else but, instead of the expected insult, Kazahaya’s face starts taking a faint redish tone that intensifies as the time passes and none of them says anything else.

“ So, you have been thinking I’m attractive?” There’s a part of him, the same one that usually convinces him to stop teasing before Kazahaya starts throwing pointy things instead of pillows, that faintly suggests this might not be a very wise course of action. Then again, the biggest proof of Rikuo’s lack of common sense is glowing red in front of him.

“Should I worry that you are going to take advantage of me when we go back home then? “

Next thing he knows, the metal zipper of his jacket hits him and Kazahaya is slamming the door on his way out.

This is what happens when you pick up idiots in the snow.

-----------------------

The trip back home is unusual. This is the first time any job has taken them so far from home and, unlike the first trip, there are no details on the job that need to be memorized to keep him distracted. Kazahaya keeps thinking about the last days: the school experience is something he had never tried, although he is not sure this is a good example to go by.

Rikuo is silently staring trough the window, but then the jerk has a habit of keeping quiet unless it’s to bug him. Kazahaya had felt a little guilty about throwing the jacket in his face - after all, Rikuo had no way of knowing he had been a little upset by the talk about the baths with Nayuki- but, considering the bastard had suggested Kazahaya should dress as a catboy for the beauty contest, he really deserved it.

What he thinks the most is of Nayuki and Mukofujiwara. Even though he only knew them for a short time, Kazahaya is happy thing turned out all right in the end. Still, it’s silly how close they were of letting things end the wrong way.

“ So it was all because he didn’t say what he really wanted to say” He says it mostly to himself, but Rikuo responds even though he is still looking away.

“It’s not so easy.” His voice sounds serious, for once. “Sometimes the hardest to say is exactly what you want to say the most.”

Kazahaya thinks of Kei, and of things that were left unsaid even though even now he doesn’t regret leaving. He thinks of the woman in Rikuo’s memories and wonders what was she to him, if Rikuo had the chance to say goodbye. But he also remembers the blood-covered room from his vision and worries that someday Rikuo will be just like one their clients.

“Kazahaya...” Rikuo looks at him and Kazahaya holds his breath.

“ ...You do have nice legs.”

“ SHUT UP!” The food tray might be a little too hard but it’s not his fault that there aren’t any pillows in sight.

Rikuo still laughs, the bastard.

---------------

Things go back to normal, for the most part. Kakei pays them very well for the job and Kazahaya is in a good mood until he finds out that somehow Saiga got a picture of him dressed as a bride and taped it to the counter. He suspects it’s all Rikuo’s fault, but he can’t be sure of it: he has been avoiding Rikuo lately.

Because it’s one thing to think Nayuki looked cute as Snow White and an entirely different thing to think Rikuo looks nice in an apron.

He has been too distracted since they returned from the job and it’s getting annoying. Apparently the flu season is over and they need to move the aspirines, but he doesn’t quite remember where he is supposed to move these boxes to. Maybe Kakei san can tell him; it might be easier to just ask Rikuo, but the less he talks to that jerk, the better. If he can ignore him long enough, then maybe the crazy thoughts will go away. Kazahaya smiles confidently and opens Kakei’s office door.

“ Ah Kudou-san. I’m a little busy at the moment.”

“ Close the door, kid. It’s a bit drafty in here without my shirt on.”

He closes the door, but it’s too late. The image is burned into his eyes and his stay at that school has given his mind enough information to reconstruct the whole scene. He is never going to be able to look at Kakei in the eyes again. Or Saiga. Or to sit in that couch again. Ever.

“Are you going to help me store these or are you going stand there all day?”

He tries to respond but somehow all that comes out of his mind is something that sounds like ‘blaargh’. Rikou walks to him, stares at Kazahaya thoughtfully, then Kakei-san’s office and two seconds later he bursts into laughter.

“DONT LAUGH YOU BASTARD! I’M TRAUMATIZED HERE!“

Rikuo is too busy laughing to even respond. His laugh comes in shaky breaths and he has to lean on a nearby counter for support.

“ THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT, YOU-“

The rest of the phrase is cut off by the sound of the office door slamming open. Kakei looks eerily predatory but at least Saiga is wearing all of his clothes now. They are both at the door before Kazahaya can even start apologizing for walking unannounced.

“Don’t forget to lock!” Kakei says before dragging a very willing Saiga to the exit.

And then they’re gone.

The drugstore is silent except for Rikuo’s breath, although he is not laughing anymore. Once the shock is over- for the most part. He is still going to avoid that office from now on- Kazahaya starts remembering all the times he has seen Saiga and Kakei in there...

“ They....they...”

“ Don’t tell me you have just noticed it now. What did you think Saiga does at the store?”

“ Sleeping, sewing and...uh, sandwiches.”

Rikuo stares at him for a moment and sighs. “You really are an idiot.”

“ You could have told me!”

“ You were too busy insulting for me to bother. It’s your own fault for being so nasty and mean.”

“WELL, WHO IS THE IDIOT THEN? YOU SAID YOU LIKED ME THIS WAY! You said I was attractive and..”

“...uh..”

There are crickets chirping outside, and some cars in the distance, but the drugstore has never been so quiet, nor Rikuo has ever looked so shocked. Kazahaya would make fun of him but his mind is too busy adding everything Rikuo has said so far and the way he looks nice wearing an apron.

“...fine. I’m the idiot.” Says Rikuo and kisses him.

-----------

The next day, Kakei doesn’t say anything; even if neither of them remembered to lock after all.

Comments

that was utterly wonderful ! You've got their dynamics spot on, and it's so delightful. Rikuou's gruff, snarky caring, Kazahaya's volatile temper and air-headness ^^ Very sweet tasting. Loving the "idiot" leitmotiv. I'd forgotten how much I loved those two ♥
Sorry it took so long to comment (work...) but that was absolutely lovely. ^_^ Really great! Thank you!
Awww. Really enjoyed that. ^___^
Hmmm... the characterization was good but the scenario relied too much on the manga. As someone who has only read the first two volumes, I was very confused during the first part. I did enjoy the resolution though. ^.^
Well, the story was written for a request that had a particular setting in mind. I hope it didn't confuse things too much...
That's not really an excuse, it is a reason. When writing fanfiction you should still treat it as something that is understandable even without the basis of the fandom. Good fanfiction can be read without having seen/read the canon and the reader should still be able to follow. I only tell you this because you seem to take your writing seriously and want to improve. ^.^
Ahaha, this is really cute. I love how you nailed their personality down. Accurately IC. <3
