Air Gear (Akira/Agito)

Title: Terrible Ideas
Fandom: Air Gear (Akira/Agito)
Author: Yurei
Recipient: ampersand
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Excessive profanity (it's Agito, after all), vaguely alluded to spoilers for most of Air Gear.
Summary: They probably won't ever talk to one another again after this.
Note: I'm glad you said you don't mind angst, because this turned out exponentially less nice than I'd first planned (and that says a lot, given who it's about).

"I'm not gonna be around much longer," Agito said abruptly one day. He was, ironically enough, less inclined to talk to Akira even months and years after he'd won the Fang Regalia back. Akito was willing enough to talk to him when Kaito wasn't around, but Agito was a harder one to pin down. He had a bad habit of making some loud, obnoxious excuse for not wanting to talk and switching the eyepatch over to force Akito back out. Today was one of those rare occasions when Agito actually deemed to sit down and talk to his former best friend.

"Akito doesn't need me for much anymore."

"Akito's going to need you around for as long as he's got a crazy brother." As much as Akira respected Kaito (or, well, feared him, but that line really blurred after you were around the guy for awhile), he had to admit that some of the things the policeman did were just wrong. All right, most of the things he'd done were just wrong. Especially the ones that involved Akito. "And you know that."

"Nah. He's learning how to fight for himself. I'll go back where I came from, and Akito will be a normal person again. Well, as normal as that kid could ever get, anyway. And he's got the crow around to take care of him when he can't fight." Akira snorted outright at that one, because he rather doubted that Minami Ikki was going to put up with that. When he was done laughing at the thought of what Akito would probably construe as being taken care of, he lit a cigarette. Agito raised an eyebrow at that.

"Yeah, bad habit. I picked it up from Kaito." You couldn't live in a trailer with a chain-smoker and not pick up the nicotine addiction secondhand, and Akira had quit trying to fight it. "I should quit. You wouldn't think it from looking at people like Kaito and Yoshitsune, but it really slows you down."

"You're always slow. Slower than I am, anyway." Agito conveniently skipped over the fact that he needed to be faster than people like Akira just to survive stormriding, given how small he was. "Don't see how smoking would make a difference. And you don't need to laugh like that. The stupid crow is probably going to do all right. Somehow."

"Oh, probably. Doesn't make it less funny." Akira blew his smoke in Agito's face. "I saw how you and Akito worked together with him when you fought me. I probably knew what was going to happen before you did."

"Shut the fuck up," Agito said irritably. "You don't know anything. You never did. And hell, you don't want to understand what you do know. Why do you think I never want to talk to you?"

"I must be on to something, if you're breaking out the insults." Akira started to raise the cigarette to his lips again, but Agito reached out and took it right out from between his fingers. "Akito's gonna kill you for that."

"Yeah, probably. His body is a temple and all that shit, until it's time to binge on the Häagen-Dazs." Agito grinned, and made no motion to give the cigarette back when he was done. Akira lit another one. "And no, you don't know a damn thing. And don't bother listening to what anybody tries to tell you, so there's no point in trying to explain."

"Wow, that doesn't sound like anybody I know," Akira said sarcastically. "You know, Akito, I'm not the only one who doesn't try to understand the other guy's point of view, here."
Agito was silent for quite awhile, until he stubbed out the spent cigarette and tossed the end aside.

"Maybe not," he said finally, looking at the sidewalk first and then up at the sky. He seemed to be trying to look anywhere but at Akira, and succeeding at it pretty well. "But that doesn't mean I can't be bitter about it. Fuck you."

"What do you want from me?" Akira asked. "I've tried telling you why I did what I did. I've listened to you tell me why my reasons don't mean a damn thing. I don't listen to you, you don't listen to me, and we never get anywhere. Why are you even talking to me today? You run away from me other time."

"I dunno why I decided to talk to you, but I'm starting to think it was a fucking terrible idea." Agito clenched his hands on his knees, fingers white against the denim of his jeans. "What do I want? I don't want a goddamn thing from you. That's what your problem is, you're convinced that I want something from you because you still fucking want something from me. You want me to tell you that what you did is okay, that I don't hate you for it? That we can be best friends again until I go away? Fuck you, Udou. I don't want anything from you, but I don't want your apologies, either. I don't care anymore."

"You're a liar. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be here." Akira laughed, but he wasn't amused. "Hell, I don't know why I'm here. Your brother's going to kill me when he finds out I've been sitting around talking to you. And then he'll kill me again for giving you a cigarette, and then again for not dragging you back with me. And I do want something from you. I want you to act like a human being for once in your life and talk to me like most people would have done a long time ago."

"I'm not most people." Agito stood up, scrubbing his hands on his jeans as if he was rubbing off Akira. "You know what, I can't deal with this. I'm fucking done with you." Akira stood up, too, and when he did Akito grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and dragged him in close. "You want me to act like a human being? You should have been friends with Akito." He kissed Akira on the mouth then, and he tasted like cigarettes. That was all wrong; Agito hadn't smoked before. "Now get the hell away from me."
